Transana 2.60 released

Already in January, a new version of Transana was released: Transana 2.60, a software for qualitative analysis and transkription. The developers statement:

The latest version of Transana allows researchers to bring still images into their qualitative analyses in several interesting ways. Features include:

– capturing images from video or importing graphics files from the hard disk

– selecting the size and framing to emphasize part of an image

– adding “coding shapes”, allowing reseachers to code images by drawing on them

– linking still images to particular places in video files, if appropriate for providing context

– including still images in Transana’s Reports and, if linked to media files, Transana’s Maps.

F4 – old and free

If you would like to easily and quickly transcribe interview data you should not miss F4. Unfortunately, since a while you have to pay to use F4 – a small amount though. For a long time the software could be used and tested for free. So if you still have one of the old versions lying around you are quite lucky. If not, here comes a sweet recommendation how to find the old version on the internet. This can also be applied for other programs: The internet never forgets.. This is (unfortunately) applicable for almost everything which was put on the internet. So it also works for F4: Download the last version which still was for free. So, if you feel happy about this hint, please smile :)

New: libreQDA

Mit diesem Eintrag wollen wir Euch die letzten Neueinträge in der SoSciSo Datenbank mitteilen. Als erstes soll ein libreQDA erwähnt werden. Ein klassisches QDA-Tool, welches als Server-Software installiert und unter einer Open Source Lizenz genutzt werden kann. Das libreQDA-Projekt ist taufrisch und so gibt es auch lediglich eine Demoversion, wobei man sich den Demo-Login hierzu noch persönlich beschaffen muss. Wir werden die EntwicklerInnen mal fragen, ob SoSciSo da mal reinschnuppern darf.

Ebenfalls neu auf SoSciSo ist Scrivener, eine Software, die das wissenschaftliche Schreiben unterstützen soll. Es wird von literatureandlatte für Windows und Mac für 40$ angeboten. Die Vorteile gegenüber konventionellen WYSIWYG-Editoren à la MS Word liegen vor allem in den Strukturierungsmöglichkeiten für kompliziertere und längere Dokumente – ein Tool für wissenschaftliches Schreiben halt.

inqscribe ist eine Transkriptionssoftware, die kommerziell für Windows und Mac (wieso sagt man eigentlich immer MAC? Macintosh klingt anscheinend zu un-hip für dieses Livestyle-Produkt…) angeboten wird. Wer 99$ über hat, kann uns gerne von den Vorteilen von inqscribe berichten.

AutoMap und Gate sind Text Processing Tools, die momentan in der SoSciSo Datenbank noch unter QDA gelistet sind. Eine Umstrukturierung des QDA Bereichs kommt hoffentlich bald. Vor allem Gate ist hier sehr zu empfehlen, für alle gängigen Plattformen und Open Source erhältlich und außerdem sieht es sehr mächtig aus. Wir können hier leider nicht mehr berichten, da Text Processing nicht ganz unser Ding ist.

Wer Hinweise auf neue Software für uns hat, sei hiermit aufgefordert, diese Informationen gnädigst mit uns zu teilen. So.

Dank der Kollegen von EXMARaLDA und deren Übersicht zu Transkriptions- und Annotationstools sind wir vor kurzem auch auf folgende 3 Tools gestoßen, die wir heute höchst offiziell und feierlich in unsere Datenbank aufgenommen haben: Casualtranscriber, xtrans, multitool. Da wir eh gerade auf dem letzten Loch pfeifen und draußen noch ein paar letzte Sonnenstrahlen zu ergattern sind, schließen wir mir dem Hinweis, dass Erfahrungsberichte zu casualtranscriber, xtrans und multitool gern an uns geschickt werden können. Wir veröffentlichen diese dann gern und freuen uns darüber. So. Sonne.

Transcription and Annotation Tools

The guys from EXMARaLDA basically are popular for their development of EXMARaLDA (Amazing, isn’t it?). EXMARaLDA is “a system of concepts, data formats and tools for the computer assisted transcription and annotation of spoken language, and for the construction and analysis of spoken language corpora.” Today, we stumbled upon their Linguistic Annotation Wiki. Within, you can find an excellent overview on Transcription and Annotation Tools. We are trying to add these tools in our SoSciSo database. We would like to thank the wiki owners for copying their content, brazenly and lazily.

TranscriberAG

Since Juli 2011 (!?) Transcriber is officially renamed and is now called TranscriberAG. Yes, since 2011. We somehow missed that. Well. The program is available for the common plattforms and it is Open Source (GPLv3). The main features can be found here. We are looking forward to first user experiences from your side. We didn’t manage to build the program yesterday on our favorite platform.
